Holy Family triumphs in international March Maths competition!

25th Mar 2019

Holy Family Primary School, Downpatrick, is celebrating international success after its students scooped Third prize in the March Maths Challenge, an inter-schools competition run by 3P Learning, creators of online maths resource Mathletics, proven to significantly increase levels of student engagement, confidence and motivation and to improve attainment and progress in maths.

Over the course of a week (11 – 17 March) 450 schools from the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa competed online to gain as many points as possible in a bid to become their nation’s best mathletes. Students also raise money for UNICEF whilst competing, with each point gained corresponding to a cash donation to the charity from 3P Learning.

Encompassing World Maths Day, the competition aims to inspire children to love learning and to become enthusiastic, confident mathematicians. During the course of the Challenge students compete online within Mathletics, gaining points for each correct answer they submit in the curriculum activities section of the resource and also in Live Mathletics where students compete in real-time with other children from around the globe. At the end of the competition the school that has gained the most points is crowned the winner, with second and third place also announced. All three schools receive money towards the renewal of their Mathletics subscription, and a celebration pack including a trophy, wristbands and certificate.

Commenting on the win Headteacher Mr Curran said, “This is a fantastic achievement for the school. We are very proud of all our students who were so enthusiastic to get involved and represent their school. Thanks to the March Maths Challenge and Mathletics many of our previously reluctant learners have enjoyed becoming mathematicians for the week; we hope to continue channelling their enthusiasm as we look to raise our standards in maths even further.”

Jayne Warburton, CEO EMEA at 3P Learning, congratulated the school: “Congratulations to everyone at Holy Family Primary who took part in March Maths. As well as completing the Challenge it is fantastic to see so many children celebrating World Maths Day and getting excited about maths. We look forward to hearing more about Holy Family’s progress and wish them the best of luck in their ongoing maths adventures!”
